Early Morning: Coffee, Sunrise and Your First Game Drive

In summer, the day begins particularly early, with wake-up calls generally around 04:30–05:00. During winter, later sunrise times mean guests can enjoy a slightly more leisurely start, with wake-up calls around 06:00.

Tea and coffee are served at the main lodge before departure, providing a chance to meet your guide before heading out into the reserve.

The morning game drive usually lasts around three hours, although the timing is flexible depending on weather, wildlife sightings and what unfolds along the way. This is one of the most rewarding times for game viewing, as cooler temperatures encourage many animals to remain active.

Your ranger and tracker will read the landscape as you travel, looking for tracks, calls and other signs of wildlife. Depending on the day, you might encounter elephants moving through the bush, a pride of lions settling down after an early hunt, a herd of buffalo, or the highly endangered African wild dogs that Madikwe is known for.

There is usually time for a refreshment stop along the way, allowing you to pause and take in the surrounding wilderness.

Breakfast and a Slower Pace

Returning to the lodge at around 08:00–08:30 in summer or 09:30 in winter, guests can settle in for breakfast or brunch overlooking the reserve.

The hours between the morning and afternoon drives are deliberately unhurried. This is your opportunity to enjoy your suite, relax beside your private plunge pool, spend time at the spa or simply sit on a viewing deck and watch the bushveld.

There is no need to fill every minute. Some of the most memorable safari moments happen while you are simply observing what comes to you. The area around the lodge can attract wildlife, so keep your binoculars nearby — you never quite know what might appear.

Lunch, Leisure and Afternoon Tea

Lunch is generally served around 13:00, offering another opportunity to enjoy a relaxed meal while taking in views of the Madikwe landscape.

The middle of the day is often the quietest period for wildlife activity, particularly during the warmer summer months, making it an ideal time to rest and recharge.

By mid-afternoon, the lodge begins to prepare for the second outing of the day. Afternoon tea and light snacks are served before guests meet their guide for the afternoon game drive.

The schedule shifts with the seasons. In summer, the afternoon drive generally departs around 16:30, while winter departures are earlier, around 16:00, allowing guests to make the most of the shorter winter days.

Afternoon Game Drive and Sundowners

As temperatures begin to drop and the afternoon light softens, the bushveld becomes active again. The second game drive offers another opportunity to explore areas of the reserve that you may not have visited that morning.

This is also the traditional time for one of safari’s great rituals: sundowners.

As the sun moves towards the horizon, the vehicle may stop at a suitable viewpoint where guests can stretch their legs, enjoy a drink and watch the landscape change colour. A G&T in hand, the sounds of the bush around you and the last light catching the treetops — it is a simple tradition, but an important part of the safari experience.

As darkness falls, the game drive continues, offering the possibility of encountering some of Madikwe’s nocturnal species and seeing familiar animals behaving differently after sunset.

Dinner Under the African Sky

After returning to the lodge, guests have time to freshen up before pre-dinner drinks and dinner.

Depending on the evening and weather, dinner may be served in the dining area or around the fire in the boma. South African wines and thoughtfully prepared cuisine round off the day, while the sounds of the reserve continue beyond the lodge.

And then, eventually, it is time to turn in — ready to do it all again tomorrow.
